Candidates running for Education Coordinator:

Emily Wagner, MSN, RN, NPD-BC, CPAN, CPN

My nursing career started at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Following that amazing year of learning and growth, I switched to the PICU at UMN Masonic Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, MN where I became CPN certified. Following the birth of my son, I discovered Perianesthesia Nursing. I partnered with our Unit-Based Educator, became CPAN certified, and felt like I had found my nursing home at last.

My family then moved from Minneapolis, MN in 2018 to Seattle, WA. I decided that I really did enjoy the educator aspects from my time in PACU in MN, so I earned my MSN-Education to pursue this passion of giving back to our specialty (November 2019 from WGU). I worked as Unit-Based Educator, then transitioned to System-Wide Perianesthesia Professional Development Specialist for Providence Swedish. I created a PACU Transition-to-Practice program for RN Residents and Fellows, became NPD-BC certified, assisted with 5-day strike, created learning modules, led skills-classes, and helped deploy COVID clinics. I also served on our Evidence-Based Practice Committee and presented at the Seattle Nursing Research Conference.

Following the pandemic, I moved to Multicare-Good Samaritan Hospital July 2022 to take on the new challenge of the Nurse Manger of the Preop, PACU, and Pre-Anesthesia Clinic units. Despite this career pivot, I am still regularly serving as the Unit-Based Educator for my teams as we have not been able to maintain a Unit-Based Educator for longer than 1-2mos in the past year.

I am super passionate about professional development, coaching, diversity/equity/inclusion work, and mentorship in all its forms. I am especially thrilled at this opportunity with NPANA as I miss the direct education work and connecting with Perianesthesia nurses looking to learn and grow their professional practice. I hope to grow the local offerings for the NPANA region, find creative ways to get the information of courses, webinars, and review courses into the hands of our members more often and in a more targeted way, and I would like to make further tailor our NPANA conferences as memorable experiences that reinvigorate the nurses’ passion for Perianesthesia Nursing and take their learning back to their home unit.

Jennifer Henderson, BSN, RN, CPAN

I'm a PACU RN at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, OR and have 8 years of PACU experience in Oregon and Washington. I appreciate the pace of our environment, autonomy in our practice, collaboration with anesthesia providers, and the supportive community of colleagues that I've found in PACU. I mostly worked in Phase 1 PACU, but was cross-trained and also worked in Phase 2. While in Washington, I also worked at an Orthopedic Surgery Center and gained experience with pre-op, Phase 1, and Phase 2 areas of care in the outpatient surgery setting.

In my current role, I am a relief charge nurse, I’m active in my Unit Partnership Committee, and I was recently a Magnet representative for my unit during our sixth redesignation!  I am working on a Clinical Ladder project and am committed to being a lifelong learner. I enjoy attending conferences and seminars and one of my favorites was the NPANA conference in Seattle (pre-Covid).

If elected to the board, a goal of mine would be to collaborate with other board members to increase awareness of NPANA and the available educational opportunities within PACUs throughout the region. I recently participated in the NPANA Spring Fling online and found that to be so informative. I greatly appreciated the online option as it made the conference much more accessible for people, like myself, who could not make the trip to Spokane. I would love to see virtual options continue to be offered as I feel the travel aspect is a barrier for many people in attending conferences.

I think it would be a fun and rewarding opportunity to be the Education Coordinator for NPANA to help facilitate the conferences and coordinate the educational topics presented. Thank you for your consideration!

Candidate running for Secretary:

Julie McQuieter, MSN-Ed, RN, CPAN

I am a Perianesthesia Educator at St. Michael Medical Center in Silverdale, Washington. I’ve been in perianesthesia nursing for 8 years, primarily in Phase I/Phase II PACU. The last two years have been as an educator. My role supports staff throughout the continuum of perianesthesia care. The staff I support would describe me as a strong advocate for safe patient care, a stickler for ensuring ASPAN guidelines are followed, and borderline obsessed with all things perianesthesia. On a personal note, I love exploring all the beauty the Northwest has to offer with my family.

I’ve been involved with ASPAN on a national level for the past two years as a part of the Professional Nurse Educator Specialty Practice Group and the Humanitarian and Global Outreach Strategic Work Team. This year, I am also participating in the Education Approver Committee. The collaboration with other perianesthesia nurses from all over the country has inspired and challenged me. Meeting NPANA component leaders at the National Conference in Denver solidified my desire to get involved on a local level.

I’m extremely passionate about perianesthesia nursing and elevating our practice. One of my goals for NPANA is to raise awareness about the benefits of membership. We have so much to offer our local community of perianesthesia nurses from scholarships, to educational offerings, to resources on clinical guidelines and evidence based practice. I want to help spread the word! Another goal is to increase the amount of educational opportunities offered through NPANA. We have a great network of nurses who are excited to share their knowledge. It would be incredible if we could host a monthly podcast or webinar covering different topics related to perianesthesia. Lastly, I would like to partner with other components to learn more about their practices including how to lead membership campaigns, tools used to reach their members, and how they get members involved in their component activities. As a board member, I would collaborate with the team to ensure our collective NPANA goals are met.

The opportunity to serve our local component and have a larger platform to share about perianesthesia nursing would truly be a gift. Thank you for your consideration.

Candidates running for VicePresident/President Elect:

Lisa Spragins, MSN, RN, CNL, CPAN, CAPA, CPPS

Lisa received her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of West Georgia in 2020. She also obtained her Clinical Nurse Leader certification from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) that same year. She maintains dual certification in perianesthesia (CPAN & CAPA) and certification as a professional in patient safety (CPPS).

She has been a loyal ASPAN member since 2008. From 2014-2019, she served her previous component of GAPAN Board of Directors in the roles of education coordinator, state conference coordinator, and vice president. She moved to Seattle, WA in 2020 and joined NPANA. At the national level, she has served ASPAN as the Advanced Degree Specialty Practice Group (ADSPG) coordinator from 2020-2023 and as a delegate for election ballots in the 2023 RA session.

She is the current NPANA Education Coordinator. During her service in this role, the NPANA continuing education process has been converted to a digital evaluation and certification distribution process. She has organized and digitally filed NPANA education records to ensure that the organization is compliant with the CE provider number requirements by the California Board of Nursing. She participated in a small working group among the NPANA Board Members to review/revise the NPANA policies to ensure they were up to date. She has also been a proponent of giving back to the community through community service. A highlight of her service as education coordinator was that NPANA members raised over $1,200 for the West Seattle Food Bank at the 2022 Fall conference. With a focus on succession planning, she has created job aids for the role of NPANA Education Coordinator to ensure that those who follow in the role are equipped with resources.

Lisa is seeking election as the NPANA Vice-President/President Elect to promote the advancement of the unique specialty of perianesthesia nursing through her core values of courage, advocacy, respect, excellence, and service. Her skills in leadership, communication, and collaboration will support the NPANA board and membership to propel our component forward.  She is honored and humbled to serve as your candidate for Vice President/President Elect for 2023.
